If your cat has a runny nose, eye discharge, a mild fever and sneezing you’re likely to refer to the symptoms as a cold. Your veterinarian will call it an upper respiratory infection. In most instances, you can treat your cat’s cold at home. If your cat’s condition doesn’t improve within a week of beginning treatment or if the symptoms worsen, you should take your pet to a veterinarian.
If your cat has a runny nose, you’ll want to wipe the mucus from your pet’s face with a cotton ball or clean cloth. If the mucous has dried into a crust, moisten the cloth or cotton ball to more gently clean your cat’s nose. Just like when you get a cold, your cat with a cold may get a dry, chapped nose. You can rub a bit of petroleum jelly on her nose to help ease the discomfort. It is safe to give your cat Afrin Children’s Strength Nose Drops. You’ll give him one drop in one nostril one day and one drop in the other nostril the next day. Continue the process for five to seven days.
Putting your cat in a room with a vaporizer may help to alleviate some of the symptoms of the cold. If you don’t have a vaporizer, turn on a hot shower and put your cat in the bathroom for 10 to 15 minutes where the steam may help to loosen any mucus. Provide your cat with a warm, comfortable place to rest while he is suffering from a cold. You might even give your cat a heating pad while he is ill. Ensure the heating pad is on its lowest setting and that it is covered with a towel. Also be sure your cat can get off the heating pad if he gets too warm.
A cat must be able to smell in order to have the appetite stimulated for eating. While your cat is suffering from a cold, you may want to try feeding your pet more smelly foods than usual to encourage her to continue eating. Smelly canned fish and other canned foods usually work best while your cat has a cold. It’s also important that your cat get plenty of fluids while she has a cold. Ensure she always has access to clean, fresh water. You might also try offering her chicken broth. The broth can be warmed in the microwave to bring out its aroma.
Vitamin C will also help your cat to fight off the upper respiratory infection. Cats can take 250mg to 500mg per day. Try administering Vitamin C to your cat every day for four days to help boost her immune system. Vitamin C can cause loose stool in your cat. If your cat begins to develop loose stool, reduce the dosage of Vitamin C you are giving her.
