Knock (short story)

"Knock", written by Fredric Brown, is a science fiction short story that starts with a description of "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long." It then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and build a more complete plot around them.

It was published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). The story was reprinted in The Best Science Fiction Stories: 1949[1]

Plot summary

The first two lines are a complete short-short story by themselves:

The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door...

The alien Zan have killed off all life other than pairs of specimens for their zoo of exotic Earth flora and fauna. Walter Phelan is the last man on Earth, but Grace Evans, the last woman, is not overly impressed with him and maintains her distance.

The Zan, who are immortal, become disturbed when one by one the other animals begin to die. They turn to Walter for advice. He tells them that the creatures have perished from lack of affection, suggesting that they pet the survivors regularly to keep them alive. He demonstrates with one of them. When the Zan begin to die, they depart the planet in fear. It is then revealed that the creature Walter advised them to pet was a poisonous snake.

Then Walter discusses the future of the human race with Grace. She is shocked by his proposal and leaves as he intended to use the zan technology left behind to create "the master race". The narrative then ends as it began:

The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door...

Operation Christmas Child

Ads_OCC_120x90

At the beginning of November we started Operation Christmas Child. I was and still am very excited to be a part of this. It’s a great cause and lots of children are going to be happy and blessed with God’s love this Christmas. I love my job because our company is always raising money for something and that’s one thing I love doing.

At work we’re raising money for OCC, we ask customers if they would like to donate to OCC. With the money we buy items and fill the items in a shoe box for different age groups for boys and girls. The shoe boxes are picked up and off they go to their destinations. Each child gets a shoe box for Christmas, no not children around here or in the U.S. Children in other countries who don’t have anything at all. I love doing this because I am grateful for everything I had growing up as a child and grateful for everything I have now. Those children over there have nothing. Children around here and in the U.S. have Toys For Tots, Salvation Army, Angel Tree and I’m sure many many other organizations that makes sure they do not go without during Christmas. It’s a good cause and I am proud and happy that I get to be a part of it.

The more shoe boxes we pack the more shoe boxes each child will get for Christmas. I stuffed a shoe box full of Spider-Man items and put my name and photo and address in it. I hope the boy that gets it writes me back, that would be cool. Every child should feel the joy and love on Christmas.
