Stuarts Draft, VA

Stuarts Draft, Virginia

Stuarts Draft is a census-designated place (CDP) in Augusta CountyVirginiaUnited States. The population was 9,235 at the 2010 census. It is part of the StauntonWaynesboro Micropolitan Statistical Area. Its been called the "Warehouse capital of the U.S." because of the seven warehouse/factories including Target Corporation distribution (T-560), Hershey Chocolate of Virginia, McKee Little DebbieHollister Inc, Nibco, Ply Gem, and Sayre factory.
The Bare House and Mill and the Harper House are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

History

In 1749, Thomas Stuart purchased 353 acres (1.43 km) near the South River, a tribuary of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River. 'Draft' probably refers to the document drafting the land sale or is a reference to the river itself (draft is an old term for river or creek and is part of the name of several such in the area). The plain on the south side of the river tends to channel the wind, thus forming a rather constant draft.

Geography

"Welcome to Stuarts Draft" sign on US 340.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 19.8 square miles (51.4 km²), of which, 19.8 square miles (51.4 km²) of it is land and 0.05% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,367 people, 3,124 households, and 2,436 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 422.0 people per square mile (162.9/km²). There were 3,279 housing units at an average density of 165.4/sq mi (63.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 95.27% White, 3.44% African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. Hispanic orLatino of any race were 1.06% of the population.
There were 3,124 households out of which 38.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.9% weremarried couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 18.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.66 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 23.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.0 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $45,342, and the median income for a family was $52,308. Males had a median income of $32,917 versus $26,414 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $18,463. About 2.2% of families and 3.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 2.7% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.

Economy

The Target Distribution Center has a footprint of 1.6 million square feet and is listed as the seventh largest tilt-up building in the United States. Stuarts Draft is also home to several other factories. There are a Hershey's Chocolate Factory (The Hershey Company), a McKee Foods factory, and many other smaller factories. In 2007, manufacturers' shipments equaled $858,943,000 of the state wide $92,417,797,000.

Parks and recreation

Kate Schneider park is operated by the Ruritans and provides three lit baseball fields, one unlit baseball field, a pavilion and a large horseshoes court. Friendship Park provides a single lit baseball field. A baseball field behind the Old Schoolhouse Restaurant has been redeveloped, and is currently used for the Stuarts Draft Diamondbacks, a county league team, and for younger American Legion baseball teams. This field was the sports field for the elementary school system until the 1980s.
Stuarts Draft Park is a county park administered that opened in 2005. It has a 25 m swimming pool, a pavilion and two unlit baseball fields that are now used often. There are three multipurpose fields; the main field is used for the annual Sweet Dreams festival. The multipurpose fields are divided up and used as several soccer fields. There are now horseshoe pits also, that are used. The park adjoins Guy K. Stump Elementary School— the school has a large playground accessible to the community.
Shenandoah Acres was a popular resort that was operated and owned by the Blacka family from 1935 to 2004. Billed as "America's Finest Inland Beach" it featured 250 camp sites, cabins, horseback riding a sand-bottom swimming lake.

Education

Stuarts Draft has four Augusta County Schools: Stuarts Draft Elementary School, Stuarts Draft Middle School, Stuarts Draft High School, and Guy K. Stump Elementary School.

Knock

Knock (short story)

"Knock", written by Fredric Brown, is a science fiction short story that starts with a description of "a sweet little horror story that is only two sentences long." It then goes on to elaborate on those two sentences and build a more complete plot around them.

It was published in the December 1948 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories. There have been three different radio adaptations (Dimension X, X Minus One and Sci Fi Channel's Seeing Ear Theatre). The story was reprinted in The Best Science Fiction Stories: 1949[1]

Plot summary

The first two lines are a complete short-short story by themselves:

The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door...

The alien Zan have killed off all life other than pairs of specimens for their zoo of exotic Earth flora and fauna. Walter Phelan is the last man on Earth, but Grace Evans, the last woman, is not overly impressed with him and maintains her distance.

The Zan, who are immortal, become disturbed when one by one the other animals begin to die. They turn to Walter for advice. He tells them that the creatures have perished from lack of affection, suggesting that they pet the survivors regularly to keep them alive. He demonstrates with one of them. When the Zan begin to die, they depart the planet in fear. It is then revealed that the creature Walter advised them to pet was a poisonous snake.

Then Walter discusses the future of the human race with Grace. She is shocked by his proposal and leaves as he intended to use the zan technology left behind to create "the master race". The narrative then ends as it began:

The last man on Earth sat alone in a room. There was a knock on the door...

Operation Christmas Child

Ads_OCC_120x90

At the beginning of November we started Operation Christmas Child. I was and still am very excited to be a part of this. It’s a great cause and lots of children are going to be happy and blessed with God’s love this Christmas. I love my job because our company is always raising money for something and that’s one thing I love doing.

At work we’re raising money for OCC, we ask customers if they would like to donate to OCC. With the money we buy items and fill the items in a shoe box for different age groups for boys and girls. The shoe boxes are picked up and off they go to their destinations. Each child gets a shoe box for Christmas, no not children around here or in the U.S. Children in other countries who don’t have anything at all. I love doing this because I am grateful for everything I had growing up as a child and grateful for everything I have now. Those children over there have nothing. Children around here and in the U.S. have Toys For Tots, Salvation Army, Angel Tree and I’m sure many many other organizations that makes sure they do not go without during Christmas. It’s a good cause and I am proud and happy that I get to be a part of it.

Ads_OCC_300x250

The more shoe boxes we pack the more shoe boxes each child will get for Christmas. I stuffed a shoe box full of Spider-Man items and put my name and photo and address in it. I hope the boy that gets it writes me back, that would be cool. Every child should feel the joy and love on Christmas.

"Grand Trunk Railroad Tunnel"

400241_461329330576199_1587734235_n

Long Description:
There is no shortage of deaths around this tunnel before it was closed. A fatal train accident that killed 2 firefighters here in the early 1900's . Then 10 men died during a lock 6
accident later on in the 1920's. 8 men were killed on site and then 2 more later on in hospital, and shortly thereafter another 8 workers were killed before

the tunnel was finally shut down and decommissioned.
Though some reports speak of confusing drops of water from the melting ice with whistling, other reports have mentioned that the whistling hummed a very specific tune.
Conversations have been heard coming from the tunnel’s east end, and music, early 20th century music described as coming from an old music box has been heard as well.
Official names for this tunnel during its usage have been "The Great Western Railway Tunnel", "The Merritton Tunnel", and "The Grand Trunk Railway Tunnel"
If visiting, take lots of pictures. There is an unexplained mist that might appear in many of them!
Type: Ghost Stories and Local Haunts

Update

Well, I have installed Windows Live Essentials 2012 which comes with Windows Live Writer so now I can update my blog. I haven’t updated it in quite awhile.

I’ve been working a lot, work keeps me busy but I love my job. This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and at work we’re raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness. Each store in our company has a goal of $600 to raise. Well, we have exceeded that goal. Last time my boss checked we had $900 something I think. We’re so close to $1,000 and I hope we’re able to get it too. I only did $2.15 last night in donations because I wasn’t busy at all and had very little customers.

In Memory of Heather Lee Santor

In Memory of Heather Lee Santor

I have known Heather for a long time. She was such a wonderful person. I loved her dearly, she was such a great friend to me and was always there for me. She was my Manager at the Kangaroo, my friend, like family to me. I heard the news and just couldn't believe it. It seemed unreal, impossible. But unfortunately the news was true. I keep thinking what if I could have been there to save her or could have warned her somehow. People keep talking about people's death is predestined and when people are born they are dealt a number and when its your time to go your time is up. But I don't want to believe that, I mean Heather was only 39 years old, too young to be gone. I wish these truck drivers would pay attention when they're driving. That truck driver wasn't paying attention and 2 people's lives were taken because of his inattention and carelessness on the road.

Heather will be greatly missed. She always had such a great attitude and was always happy and smiling. She was such a positive person. She was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back. She was such an unselfish person and she loved her family very much.

I will greatly miss her, she will always be in my thoughts and she'll never be forgotten.

I love you Heather, I'll never forget you. God has another angel in heaven, may you rest in peace.

Wreck leaves hero with wrenching memories

By Joe Beck Harry Hamilton Jr. was a shaken hero Monday after pulling one passenger to safety from a flaming wreck Friday night on Interstate 81 near the Kernstown exit in Frederick County. Hamilton said he was grateful to have saved the life of Zackary Santor, 18, of Staunton, but the horrifying sights and sounds of watching two other passengers die inside the 1998 Jeep Cherokee have robbed him of sleep and some of the satisfaction he might otherwise have gained from his dramatic actions. Santor's mother and the driver of the Jeep, Heather Lee Santor, 39, and Acoye M. Breckenridge, 18, both of Staunton, could not be rescued, despite the efforts of Hamilton and two others he identified as off-duty firefighters. A tractor-trailer rear-ended the Santors' Jeep while it was stopped in southbound traffic near a road construction site at about 7:48 p.m. The Jeep then plowed into the rear of a Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Hamilton's daughter, Jenelle Embrey, 45, of Linden. Hamilton was in the passenger's side of the front seat. The driver of the truck, Lance W. Anderson, 43, of Hudson, S.D. received a summons from state trooper B.G. Davis for reckless driving, according to state police spokesman Sgt. F.L. "Les" Tyler. Hamilton, 66, of Winchester, said he had a "couple of cuts" on his hands from breaking the window on the passenger's side of the Jeep and helping Zackary Santor scramble out of the vehicle. "He was like in a daze," Hamilton said of Santor. "I grabbed him and took him out of there. I remember he was sort of like pedaling a bicycle with his feet going, trying to get out of that window." Hamilton said Zackary Santor was crying "mom, mom" after climbing out of the vehicle. As Hamilton then tried to decide how to rescue Heather Santor and Breckenridge when the two other people stepped in to help, he said. They used a fire extinguisher and that started to bring the fire under control for a few moments, but the extinguisher quickly ran out of spray and "then the blaze roared through the whole vehicle," Hamilton said. "That boy watched his mother burn to death and his best friend in the back seat burn to death," Hamilton said of Zackary Santor. "It's something that's going to take a long time for me forget about." Hamilton said the impact of the accident sent the Jeep 250 feet down the road and the PT Cruiser 300 feet. He estimated the truck traveled 500 feet. "We were spinning around in circles and then the truck hit us again," Hamilton said. Hamilton said he emerged from his vehicle about 60 feet away from the Jeep and immediately dashed to the stricken vehicle. He said he found out later that Heather Lee Santor had managed to unbuckle her son's seat belt before passing out. Hamilton said he estimated only about 25 seconds elapsed between the time he ran to the Santor vehicle, and the time it was completely swallowed in flames. Hamilton criticized the Virginia Department of Transportation for what he regards as a lack of signage warning approaching drivers of construction farther down the road. "I don't know why whoever was working on that road didn't have advance warning flashing lights set up before traffic was stopped," he said. "I think that's one of the dumbest things. Whoever was responsible for those to be in position should have watched those people burn to death. They might have some different thoughts." Edwin Carter, an assistant residency administrator at VDOT's Edinburg residency, said it would be "hard for us to comment" until seeing the state patrol's report on the accident. Carter said someone tasked with monitoring the work of road contractors went to the accident scene after it was reported. "He did respond to that. I'll need to talk to him to find out what he observed when he got there," Carter said. Another I-81 motorist who said she saw the road ahead of her explode into a fireball as she came upon the accident said she agreed with Hamilton. Linda Meyer, of Leesburg, said the area needs more and better advance warning of the construction site "I have to agree with him," she said when told of Hamilton's remarks. "It was pretty dark. I didn't see any flashers or signs that there was roadwork ahead." Meyer added that she was traveling in the northbound lane opposite the side of the roadway in which the accident happened. She didn't know whether there were any signs in the immediate area of the accident. Hamilton likened the psychological effects of his experience to that of a combat veteran from Afghanistan, Iraq or Vietnam. "I've been taking sleeping pills myself," he said. "I'm telling you I wake up 15 to 20 times a night." Meyer called Hamilton's actions heroic, but Hamilton can't shake the wrenching emotions he felt as he watched two people die before his eyes. "I just wish I could have done more," he said. Colo. suspect's mom learned of shooting from media » Knoxville News Sentinel

I know many of you will be probably be rude as hell after reading this article and make stupid ass comments that are not necessary and will not help the situation. With that said, I would like to say that, yes her son is the one that is the suspected shooter BUT, her family needs support as well and thankfully they are getting it from their church. They are going to need support because stupid ass people are probably going to start calling their house threatening them or show up at their house and all sorts of other negative things could happen to them or to them because of the whole situation. Remember though, the parents didn't do this and they shouldn't be treated like they did. Their son is the one who opened fire on people in a theater, he did this, not them. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of the Aurora Shooting but my thoughts and prayers also go out to James Holmes parents right now in this tough time.

Staunton caregiver's abuse leads to horrific end for man

This is an article written in The News Leader, my local paper. It was Written by Brad Zinn. Here's the link for the article ---> http://www.newsleader.com/article/20120331/NEWS01/203310319/Staunton-caregiver-s-abuse-leads-horrific-end-man?odyssey=tab%7Ctopnews%7Ctext%7CFrontpage+DontMiss I copied the article because after awhile The News Leader links to articles don't work anymore. So here's the article. This is just awful. I just couldn't believe what I was reading. Staunton caregiver's abuse leads to horrific end for man STAUNTON — When 85-year-old Russell Beach, malnourished, bruised and deathly ill, was finally admitted to Augusta Health in the spring of 2010, it was the first time he had seen a doctor in three years. A second-grade dropout who worked for the Virginia Department of Highways in menial construction jobs and as a flagger, in the mid-1990s Beach was retired and living in a dilapidated Verona mobile home when he met Jeannette V. Hymes, a caregiver who would convince him to come live with her at her North Jefferson Street residence in Staunton. Fifteen years later Beach, who never married or had children of his own, died on May 29, 2010. Hymes, 50, pleaded guilty Friday in Staunton Circuit Court to a felony charge of abuse and neglect of an incapacitated patient. In court, Staunton prosecutor Raymond C. Robertson painted a disturbing picture of Beach's last few years of life spent in filth and disease, his bank accounts raided, his body battered with hypothermia that left him so cold doctors could not get a temperature reading in May 2010. "She treated him like a dog," Robertson said a witness told him. Hymes now faces the possibility of a 10-year prison term when sentenced. On May 26, 2010, Beach was taken to the emergency room at Augusta Health in Fishersville by Hymes, who told physicians Beach had fallen after trying to stand when a dog spilled hot coffee on his foot. But Robertson said Beach was incapacitated and could not walk, despite Hymes' claims that he was mobile and used a walker. Police searched Hymes' home and did not find a walker, a wheelchair or even a cane, the prosecutor noted. Robertson said fresh bruises and cuts were found on Beach, along with four broken ribs and a hip fracture. Numerous bedsores, known as pressure ulcers, covered parts of his body. Beach also suffered from malnutrition, and Robertson said doctors noted his hypothermia was "consistent with lying in a cold place for a long period of time." A toe injury, doctors concluded, appeared to have been caused when Beach was dragged over an uneven surface "like stairs," Robertson said. At least eight wounds, which Robertson said closely matched the shape of a belt buckle found in Hymes' home, were discovered on the victim's skin. Beach died three days after being taken to the hospital. An autopsy noted his numerous injuries, including blunt force trauma to the head and gangrene, and listed the cause of death as sepsis, a bacterial infection. "It rots you from the inside out," Robertson said. Robertson said one of Beach's femurs — the largest bone in a human's body — was so soft that it "crumbled" in the hand of the pathologist. The autopsy concluded Beach's death was a homicide, Robertson said. Staunton police investigators initiated a probe and discovered Beach's blood on a steep set of basement stairs in Hymes' home, and said Hymes was both reluctant and guarded when initially questioned, according to Robertson. When asked where Beach slept, Hymes first showed authorities a bedroom with feminine hygiene products on a dresser. A second bedroom where Hymes claimed Beach stayed had a picture of rapper Tupac Shakur, Robertson said. As it turns out, Beach was kept in the basement of Hymes' home, Robertson said. One witness said Beach's "bed" was a dog's blanket in front of Hymes' washer and dryer. Officers also discovered a mattress in the basement, which Robertson said reeked of "ammonia and urine." During a series of police interviews, Hymes denied Beach lived in the basement but finally admitted he'd been living there for a "couple of years," Robertson said. Despite telling police that Beach was provided with plenty of clothing, Hymes could only produce two pairs of pants, one with a 42-inch waist and the other with a 36-inch waist, neither of which fit Beach. She also described the diet she reportedly fed to Beach, but officers did not find the foods that Hymes listed, Robertson said. Except for a bottle of headache reliever, no medications were in the home at the time of Beach's death. In a police interview played in court, Hymes denied abusing Beach. "Why would I want to try and harm him?" she told police. Asked about his numerous injuries, she responded, "He bumped himself all the time." Robertson said before the emergency room visit in May 2010, Beach hadn't seen a doctor for more than three years. Robertson also said for at least 11 years Hymes collected Beach's Social Security and retirement checks from his bank accounts. The checks totaled $1,400 per month. Following Friday's hearing, Circuit Judge Humes J. Franklin Jr. ordered that Hymes be held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail pending sentencing.
